I've gotten the opportunity to go bicycling with some friends over the past few weeks. One trip was to Pulau Ubin, a small island off of the "mainland" of Singapore. The other was to East Coast park -- a linear park appropriately located along the east coast of Singapore.
A group of twelve of us made the day-long trip to Pulau Ubin to get a little fresh air and greenery. Pulau Ubin is located off the north east coast of Singapore (see the map embedded in my Picasa photo album of the trip). You take a ferry to get to the island. It is a popular place to go on the weekends to get away from the hustle and bustle of the very urban Singapore. There is a quiet village on Pulau Uban where you can rent bicycles, have lunch, buy fruit, or just take a stroll. Renting bicycles allows you to traverse the island along a number of paved and unpaved bicycle trails. A bicycle with a basket allows you to pick some fresh fruits from the trees and bring it home for a nice snack. Many people 'harvest' the infamous durian on the island.

On another trip, a group of us met at East Coast Park for an afternoon of bike riding. In my case, I met one friend, Kei from Japan, at City Hall and we rode our bicycles the 8 km (5miles) to East Coast Park. We took about 30 minutes to negotiate the dense Singapore traffic and make it to the park. There, we met the rest of our group -- who came from farther away by bus. After renting bicycles, we all spent a few hours riding north along the coast. We passed many of the park patrons enjoying the fine afternoon. Families were having picnics along the shore. People were riding bicycles and roller-blades along the paved path. It was very nice to see so many people out and enjoying the public parks.
After two hours we were all pretty tired and hungry. We at dinner at a Hong Kong Cafe in the little 'village' in the center of East Coast Park. After dinner, Kei and I of course had to ride our bikes back to the city. It was a long but fun day!
